About Us

Western Union has been connecting people for over 160 years and has been “moving money for better” for over 140 years. Today, WU has over 135 years doing business in México.

The company we know today as Western Union began in 1851 as one of the world’s first telegraph companies.

In essence, the telegraph was the very first electronic network — what has been called “the first Internet” — as it was the first moment in history that human beings could connect with one another instantly “online.” Although it’s difficult to imagine today, in the 19th century the delivery of a letter sent by the postal service could take months. In 1861, Western Union changed history when it connected both sides of the United States with the first transcontinental telegraph line, thereby creating an instant human connection in spite of physical distance.

A decade later in 1871, Western Union launched the first electronic money transfer service, so that money could arrive even when one wasn’t able to be there. A few years later in 1879, Western Union arrived in Mexico and began to work with Telecomunicaciones de Mexico (Telecomm), a partnership that has lasted for over 135 years now. Today Western Union has over 500,000 points of sale on a global level and moves over $150 billion dollars in 200 countries and territories around the world. In Mexico, Western Union has an ample network of agents with over 26,000 locations, in all of the 32 states. The Western Union group of products includes three brands: Western Union, available for sending and receiving, Vigo and Orlandi Valuti, which are available for receiving money transfers from the United States.
