Send and Receive

To receive money you need the following:

  • A valid, official ID with a photo
  • The complete name of your sender
  • The approximate amount you are to receive
  • The Money Transfer Control Number (MTCN), which you should receive from your sender

To send money you need:

  • A valid, official ID with a photo
  • The complete name of the receiver
  • The city, state and country where you would like to send money

The MTCN, or Money Transfer Control Number, or tracking number, is the unique reference number assigned to your money transfer. (You may also hear this referred to as the Money Transfer Control Number.) Your receiver will need this number when they pick up their money at an agent location. You’ll need it to track your money transfer online or through our customer support center.

Agents are those establishments in which you can send or receive money via Western Union.

It depends on the service you select:

  • Money in Minutes: generally available in minutes.
  • Next Day service for pick up at an Agent location: available as early as 7 am the following day with a participating agent

The maximum amount for either sending or receiving in Mexico is $7,499 USD (or the equivalent in Mexican pesos) by person, transaction, or day.

The maximum amount that can be paid in cash may vary and depends on the Agent.

Please contact the Agent location you’d like to visit and confirm their amounts.

You’ll need the following information to track your money transfer:

  • The MTCN
  • The receiver’s country
  • The amount sent
